Beshear, the son of a popular former Democratic governor, spent a large part of his term as attorney general challenging Bevin's policies, from state benefit cuts to abortion restrictions, setting up a fierce rivalry that came to a head in the gubernatorial race.
She acknowledged that the Democrats' complete takeover in Virginia was "terrible" for Republicans, but argued that "in the state of Kentucky, we had a very unpopular governor", but that "Trump comes in and he made this race as competitive as you can possibly make it". "I would hope [every] person in this room here wants Kentucky to be the greatest version of itself possible, I really hope so".

After acknowledging that other Republicans in Kentucky had won on Tuesday night, he added: "If it's truly Bevin-specific, then [for] Republicans maybe it's not as dire as it seems this morning".
On Tuesday the party finished the job, winning both chambers of the state's legislature and delivering the party unified control of the state government for the first time since 1993. He said the results would hold and that it was time to move forward.

One thing that may not get talked about enough is that since Trump has been president, turnout has been very high in almost all elections.
