The Russian Ministry of Communications on Monday announced that it had successfully conducted a series of tests to check whether the country's internet service would function if it were to disconnect from the Worldwide Web, reports BBC.
This alternative internet, which can be shut off at will by internet service providers, has passed its testing phase according to the Russian government.
Putin said this is a defensive measure against foreign cybersecurity threats.
The law, which Putin signed in May, requires Russian internet providers to install equipment provided by authorities to allow centralized control of data traffic.
"The outcomes of the review showed that government agencies and communications operators are ready to respond effectively to threats", Russia's Communications Ministry was quoted as saying after the tests.
The ministry added that the results of the unplugged internet will now be presented to President Putin.
The government did not reveal any technical details about the tests and what exactly they were.
The initiative involves restricting the points at which Russia's version of the net connects to its global counterpart, giving the government more control over what its citizens can access.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) services let users make secure internet connections across public networks and can be used to access blocked websites.
These throttle points can serve as a huge rotary switch for Russia's external Internet connectivity, but they can also function as an Internet surveillance device, similar to the technology of the Great Firewall of China, as many privacy advocates have pointed out.
