The attorney, Robert Costello, said Giuliani "at my insistence" called Trump "within the last day" to emphasise he had not been serious when he said he had an "insurance policy, if thrown under the bus".
When asked by repeatedly by O'Reilly Tuesday whether he directed Giuliani to go to Ukraine or to put heat on that country, Trump said: "No". Giuliani said he dismissed that suggestion but spent about a month considering a separate deal with the Ukrainian government. "The Times could not determine whether the documents it reviewed comprise the entirety of the efforts by Mr. Giuliani and other lawyers to represent Ukrainian government officials". "Rudy has clients other than me".
In a pattern reminiscent of the way Trump dealt with his previous personal attorney Michael Cohen - who is now serving a three-year prison sentence - the President suggested he was in the dark about Giuliani's agenda in Ukraine, despite weeks of impeachment testimony establishing the opposite. "I will ask him to call you along with the Attorney General". Both Gordon Sondland - the United States ambassador to the European Union - and Kurt Volker - the special envoy to Ukraine - have testified that they were directed by Trump to work with Giuliani on the bid for Ukraine to announce a Biden probe. This suggests that, far from being on a lone mission, Giuliani was acting as Trump's voice in Ukraine.
At the same time, a federal criminal investigation into Giuliani is examining his role in the campaign to oust Marie Yovanovitch, the US ambassador to Ukraine, and scrutinizing any financial dealings he may have had with Ukrainian officials, according to people briefed on the matter.
"He never did and I never did", Giuliani said. Rudy very much knows what's happening and he is a very capable guy.
"I think he's done work in Ukraine for years", Trump said during an interview for former Fox News anchor Bill O'Reilly's "No Spin News" program.
Trump shrugged off the remarks when asked about them by a reporter Monday, calling Giuliani a "great guy".

The Democratic-led House is aiming to resolve the question of Trump's impeachment before the end of the year, possibly by approving articles of impeachment and forwarding them to the Republican-controlled Senate for a trial that could begin in January.
