It's unlikely that there will be any jury trials in the Santa Barbara County Superior Courts in the near future, as the criminal-justice system seeks to protect its participants from the novel coronavirus.
"In light of public health concerns arising from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the State of Emergency declared by the Governor, courts are taking extraordinary measures to ensure that all who use and work in our courts are safe", Trial Court Chief Justice Paula Carey said in the statement.
Video conferencing will be available for urgent cases involving people who are in custody.

Twenty Eighth District Court Judge Nanette Hasette came up with a plan of action she hoped would make it less likely for pathogens to be transmitted in the jury room, but she said those plans were scrapped when state leaders got involved in the discussions.
"This suspension does not apply to trials in which the jury has already been empanelled, which will continue as usual".
The Court Service said it was trying to limit the threat to health posed by large gatherings, while also respecting people's rights.
"Jury panels for upcoming matters are being directed not to attend court", the post reads.

The disruption may end up having an unintended benefit, Stein said, if the courts see a positive impact from videoconferencing and remote hearings, reducing the requirements for in-person appearances.
