The statement, published today on Twitter by Khashoggi's son Salah, said: "In this blessed night of the blessed month [of Ramadan] we remember God's" saying: "If a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah'. Whether or not Jamal Khashoggi's son's forgiveness is genuine or was coerced out of him, not only his killers must face justice, but also those who ordered the murder".
The family of the journalist - who was an outspoken critic of Saudi royals before his grisly murder at Riyadh's embassy in Istanbul in October 2018 - signaled in December that they would not oppose the verdicts handed out to those implicated in the case.
Five men were sentenced to death in the case last year in a Saudi court, while three others were given 24 years in prison for their role in the murder plot.
However, Khashoggi's fiancee Hatice Cengiz said on Friday that no one could pardon his killers.
Salah Khashoggi, who lives in Saudi Arabia and has received financial compensation from the royal court for his father's killing, explained that forgiveness was extended to the killers during the last nights of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in line with Islamic tradition to offer pardons in cases allowed by Islamic law.
The murder caused a global uproar and tarnishing the reputation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with some Western governments, as well as the Central Intelligence Agency, alleging he had ordered the killing.
Saudi authorities did not comment on the legal ramifications of this, but analysts said it could effectively grant clemency to five people on death row.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud's image was tarnished by Jamal Khashoggi's death
In all, 11 people were put on trial in Saudi Arabia over the killing.
"Other legal procedures by the state continue".
"The killers came from Saudi with premeditation to lure, ambush & kill him".
"We affirm our confidence in the Saudi judiciary at all levels", Salah Khashoggi said at the time, describing the trial as a "fair" one.
"In practice, Khashoggi's killers will not be subject to the death penalty".
Investigators believe that he was murdered and dismembered while she waited outside, but his remains have never been recovered.
After initially offering shifting accounts of what transpired, and under intense worldwide and Turkish pressure, Saudi prosecutors eventually settled on the explanation that Khashoggi had been killed by Saudi agents in an operation masterminded by two of the crown prince's top aides at the time.
However, a report by United Nations envoy Callamard linked Prince Mohammed to the killing, a claim which the kingdom denies. His critics, however, point to USA intelligence reports that say an operation like this could not have happened without his knowledge.
