Cristobal is expected to maintain tropical storm strength through landfall later on Sunday. It is not expected to become a hurricane but will drop up to 12 inches (30 cm) of rain in some areas as bands move through the central and eastern Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Storm total rainfall amounts could exceed 35 inches by the time the rain finally ends.
Peak winds around the center have been registered around 50 miles per hour, with gusts of about 60 miles per hour and showers stretching out mostly on the eastern half of the storm with heavy rain from New Orleans through the Florida Panhandle. "There's a high risk of rip currents and high surf at the beaches" in our area. Tropical storm warnings are posted for much of the Louisiana coastline, Mississippi, Alabama and portions of the Florida panhandle.
High resolution forecast models are showing Cristobal likely coming ashore and making landfall sometime in the evening hours of Sunday in extreme southern Louisiana. While the storm will significantly weaken once it makes it that far north, it will still be able to produce several inches of rain for cities like Madison and Oshkosh, Wisconsin, as well as Cedar Rapids and Dubuque, Iowa.
The third named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season will make landfall today (Sunday, June 7, 2020) along the Gulf Coast after spawning a damaging tornado in Florida and churning up risky seas.
