Zuckerberg's address fell short, said Rashad Robinson, president of civil rights group Color Of Change, which is one of the groups behind the boycott campaign. During his introduction he announced the broad new policy changes, reversing about a year's worth of rhetoric about the importance of free speech and the necessity of allowing politicians and their campaigns to lie.
Zuckerberg clarified that Facebook will take down "content that incites violence or suppresses voting", saying even if a politician or government official posts such content, "there is no newsworthiness exemption" in such a case. Starbucks also confirmed that it will continue posting on social media, but will refrain from paid promotions.
"The spokesperson added, as a company, we stand for the values of togetherness and inclusion and we are resolute in our commitment to make a difference and be part of positive change". The retailer would continue to post unpaid content on Facebook, which is its second-largest paid advertisement platform.
The policy changes come during a growing ad boycott campaign, called "Stop Hate for Profit", that was started by several USA civil rights groups after the death of George Floyd, to pressure the company to act on hate speech and misinformation.
REI, $22.5 million: The retailer said June 19 that it was pulling all advertising from Facebook and Instagram in July. But critics have said Zuckerberg is simply allowing hateful speech to flourish on the social network with few limits.
The decision opens the door for Facebook to label posts by President Trump, much as Twitter has done with some of the president's tweets about mail-in ballots and the protests against racism and police brutality.

Twitter, Facebook remove Trump's edited 'CNN' video with 'racist baby'
It flagged Trump's tweets about fraudulent postal ballots and redirected users to a factcheck of the claims. In Trump's tweet posted June 18, the video shows two small boys, one Black and one white.
In a statement on Friday the company, which owns ice cream firm Ben & Jerry's, said it was not going to advertise with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the U.S. until at least the end of the year.
"Continuing to advertise on these platforms at this time would not add value to people and society".
Most social media platforms take measures when users violate their policies.
That's not all. Stop Hate for Profit is also seeking refunds for advertisers whose messages appear next to content that was removed for violating Facebook's terms of service.
Facebook said it would attach labels to all posts across its network that discuss the subject of voting, in a move meant to hamper any disenfranchisement of voters in the November election.
Facebook spends billions of dollars a year to keep its platforms safe and works with outside experts to review and update its policies, the company said in a statement Friday. These include attaching links to Facebook's US Voting Information Center for posts that discuss voting, including from politician, banning posts that make certain false claims to discourage voting, and a pledge to more quickly remove false claims about polling conditions in the 72 hours leading into election day. Brands boycotting Facebook states that the social media giant is generating revenue through hateful and humiliating content.
"Our conversations with marketers and civil rights organizations are about how, together, we can be a force for good", said Everson, vice-president of Facebook's global business group. Twitter said it respected the advertisers' decisions and would continue to communicate closely with them, according to the story.
