A local investigation grew into an interstate probe that attracted global attention as details continued to emerge. The Kauai Police Department said it had served Vallow with a court order to take her children to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. Police have been searching for the two children of Daybell's wife, Lori Vallow, 46, since previous year.
"We got this news early this morning that Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation had served a search warrant at Chad Daybell's property and have been in touch with law enforcement throughout the day", the Woodcocks said in a statement.
Multiple witnesses told the East Idaho News that they saw police take Daybell into custody near his home in Rexburg, Idaho on Tuesday. He faces two counts of evidence destruction, adjustment or concealment.
Fremont County Magistrate Judge Faren Eddins sided with prosecutor Rob Wood's request of $1 million bail for Chad Daybell, noting the evidence that he is accused of concealing is human remains.
Besides the missing children, the couple have been under scrutiny following the deaths of both of their former spouses. Wood had asked for a bail of $1 million, saying Chad Daybell had a "strong incentive to flee".
On Tuesday, Vallow's husband was arrested at his Idaho home after authorities revealed that human remains had been discovered on the rural property. Her brother, Alex Cox, died in December of an apparent blood clot in his lung.
He claimed the shooting was in self-defense and died that December.
Charles Vallow had filed for divorce from his wife, claiming he was afraid she might kill him and that she held apocalyptic beliefs, according to the outlet - including that she was "a god assigned to carry out the work of the 144,000 at Christ's second coming in July 2020".
The last time children were seen together was on September 8 when they visited Yellowstone National Park with their mother and uncle Alex Cox. The results of the ensuing autopsy have not been publicly released. They said Lori Daybell wouldn't tell them why the boy was always unavailable.
A few days later, JJ's grandparents, Larry and Kay Woodcock, announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the kids. Chad and his new wife, Lori Vallow Daybell, are being investigated for conspiracy, attempted murder and murder in connection to the death. Initially, the death was ruled as natural but it is now considered suspicious and her remains have been exhumed for an autopsy.
