The nation's leading infectious disease expert made the remark at a Senate hearing on reopening schools and workplaces.
Fauci said that he can't make an accurate prediction of the number of cases and deaths the United States will see before the pandemic is over, but said, 'It's going to be very disturbing, I will guarantee you that'.
The U.S. reported upwards of 40,000 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - some of the biggest daily spikes since the pandemic began.
"I would not be surprised if it goes up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around".
Fauci expressed dismay over people congregating in crowds and not wearing masks and inadequate attention being paid to guidelines on reopening.
And while Dr. Fauci is a supporter of certain so-called "reopening" pushes, he noted that we are now experiencing the fallout from not doing so in a more responsible and "measured" way.
